India's forex reserves jumped by $7.65 billion to $638.26 billion in the week ended February 7, the RBI said on Friday. This is the third consecutive week of a jump in the kitty, which had increased by $1.05 billion to $630.61 billion for the week ended January 31.

India's forex reserves rose by $204 million to $532.87 billion for the week ended October 7 on an increase in the value of gold holdings, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. In the previous reporting week, the overall reserves had dropped by $4.85 billion to $532.66 billion. The reserves had been falling for many weeks now as the central bank deploys the kitty to defend the rupee amid pressures caused majorly by global developments.

The reserves, which have been dipping as the central bank deploys the kitty to defend the rupee amid pressures caused majorly by global developments, had declined by over $8.13 billion to $537.52 billion in the previous reporting week. In October 2021, the country's forex kitty had reached an all-time high of $645 billion.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Swaminathan J criticised some non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) for lax loan appraisal practices and charging excessive interest rates, even as he acknowledged the sector's rapid expansion over the past decade, especially in recent years. "Unfortunately, some NBFCs seem to believe they can operate with weak underwriting in the pursuit of fast growth while levying excessive and unsustainable interest rates - sometimes disguised as upfront or processing fees - followed by aggressive recovery methods in case of default," Swaminathan said at the conference of NBFCs in Chennai last month.

The Reserve Bank of India on Monday tweaked norms related to acquisition and holding of shares in banks to ensure that their ultimate ownership and control remain well diversified and the major shareholders are 'fit and proper' on a continuing basis.
